Rebooting Civilization Book Review

Rebooting Civilization: How to maintain a high standard of living both now, and after a breakdown in the system

By William Ruebens

Rebooting Civilization: How to maintain a high standard of living both now, and after a breakdown in the system by [Ruebens, William ]
This book was begun during the Prepper phenomena, when the author tried to answer the question; "What is the highest standard of living that I could achieve without electricity or fossil fuels?" This led to an examination of history, and the means by which people lived, cooked, heated and illuminated their houses. This, in turn, led to finding the best ways to do those things without electricity and fossil fuels, and how we today are so utterly dependent upon them. The main emphasis is not so much stockpiling of desired goods, but of having the knowledge to make and create what you need; to be able to better handle a crises of indeterminate length. Although the book has a great deal of advice on Prepping, it should not be viewed solely as advice to prepare you for an inevitable breakdown in the system, but very much a day-to-day recognition of how to live better now, even if a breakdown does not occur.

MY REVIEW

Rebooting Civilization would be a good book to include in your survival repertoire. Most prepper books guide you through the basics, like storing up food and water, or creating a bugout bag, but this one takes you past those basics and goes so far as to prepare for learning how to begin living the way people centuries ago lived. Only now we have other knowledge that those people didn’t have. The book expounds on things like grinding the grains you will grow, using a scythe, preparing ahead for foraging, and even how to crack nuts and cook soybeans. This is a book written by a scientist, so be prepared to read technical things like how to create gases, glass, metal, and the like.

Like the author, I too want to do more than just survive. I also agree that we should at least be working on transitioning to this way of life. This book made me think about things I had never considered before. The technical aspects made for a boring read, but these things need to be thought about before that time is at hand. Just reading this book has given me the kick in the pants that I needed, to look ahead to preparing for my future.
